Huron Soccer Travel Information:There are many questions asked in regard to our travel division. Here is some general information for you to review that should answer many of them.Divisions:Recreational: Rec. is pay to play division for all ages and skill levels. Players are registered and placed on a gender and age appropriate team. Our rec league is through the GREAT LAKES SOCCER LEAGUE (GLSL) that is the southeastern division of the MICHIGAN STATE YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION (MSYSA). Select: Select play is a more competitive level of play for the more skilled and aggressive type players. Tryouts are held and the coach is able to select the players they feel are best for the team. Our select league is through the Western Suburban Soccer League (WSSL), also part of the MSYSA.Teams Played:The travel teams may differ for various reasons. The GLSL is comprised of teams within a 100 mile radius of each other. History indicates that HSA has competed against teams as far north as Fowlerville, Chelsea and Howell and as nearby as Taylor, Van Buren, Dearborn and Canton. Other members of the GLSL have included Wayne/Westland, Garden City, Redford, Monroe as well as a couple Canadian teams. WSSL clubs are based on a thirty mile radius from the city of Novi. Teams often played are as near as Taylor and Monroe to as far as Dexter and Hartland.Games:In the GLSL U9 through U12 play their games on Saturdays and may have 1 or 2 matches during the week. U13 up to U19 compete on Sundays (after noon) and again, play 1 or 2 midweek. In WSSL (select), the coach determines the day of play and could be any day of the week. There typically are 8 - 10 games on the calendar. Half of the games are played at our home site located on Huron River Drive... the cornfields! The Travel season begins in the fall in September to November for the first season and again in the spring around the third week in April and finishes up the second week of June. There are always opportunities to play through the winter in indoor facilities also.Practices:As in other sports, the practice schedule is up to the discretion of the coach. Typically, travel teams practice twice a week from the onset and throughout the season. It is a bigger commitment when joining a travel team and children should be focused to improve their skills and build team spirit.Levels:There are MANY levels of competition in the GLSL. The league depicts your placement based upon experience as well as input from HSA’s travel representative. The GLSL “begins” at the St. Clair (beginner) division and goes up in degree of experience... Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan then Superior. The Select Divisions go by numbers, Div 1,2,3 etc., depending on the number of team competing in that age group that year.. The ages generally run every year from U9 to High School Open.Cost:Cost is a bit more for obvious reasons. The uniforms are more expensive. They are worn for both seasons and kept thereafter. The officials are paid more as the games become more competitive. Socks, shin guards and cleats are at your expense. |
